| The Goshawk is the largest North American
accipiter
inhabiting areas in the forested regions of Canada and the extreme northern United States,
extending south into the Rocky Mountains and northern Appalachians.
The goshawk is usually non-migratory, remaining on the breeding range throughout the winter months.
During the
cyclical population lows of Snowshoe Hares and Ruffed Grouse that occur ever 9 to 11
years, large numbers of adult Goshawks are forced south in search of food.
I sketched and painted this Goshawk from a blind
near her nest in the Eagle Cap Wilderness in the Willowa
Mountains. Every hour or so she would
turn her eggs and stretch from her task of incubation. |
