Jon Janosik is a
fine art painter whose works reflect his strong connection with bird life,
the landscape and the natural habitat. His media include oil, acrylic,
watercolor, tempera and pastels. He is a native of New England who has
lived in Oregon for the past twenty-five years. Jon received formal
training in anatomy and zoology at Oberlin College and studied painting
with Don Eckelberry .
For over thirty years he
has been following, studying, and painting birds in their natural settings.
This has given
him a unique perspective on the subjects of his paintings and illustrations.
Many of the
birds that Jon paints are vanishing species and he has devoted himself to making a
record of these for the future. He sees his work akin to the pictographs on a rock wall,
reminding us of a changing world.
Jons illustrations appear in the National Geographic and Audubon
Society field guides, as well as Readers Digest and Encyclopedia Britannica
books. His work has been on exhibition at state museums, the Smithsonian Institution and
the British Museum. His paintings are in the collections of numerous institutions
including the Carnegie Museum, Household International, and a number of other major public and
private collections in the United States.

"Truth in art is realized
when a close dialogue exists, between the artist (as interpreter) and
nature. Nature excites human imagination and compels the artist to
express the impressions taken in from the world around. What I'm after in
my painting is "Expression of Nature." I continue the
dialogue,
and even after many years I find the conversation always fresh and
exhilarating.
"So how
do I paint? The "gradual" way of
slowly building a painting in stages of color and light? Or the "sudden" way in
direct opposition to deliberation and rules by spontaneously applying paint in the
moment?
"I
dont know if this dilemma will ever be completely resolved for me, but the voyage
across the river is very pleasant. Can you see those loons in the reeds?
With all the
ignorant destruction of forests, lakes, and oceans, the larger question is:
How do I reveal
deeper layers of meaning about nature and bird-life in human existence?" |
